English Speaking and Verb Patterns: Group- 1

English verb patterns

For developing interest in learning English, it is good to learn some easy and useful patterns. We can learn them in some parts. Basically, we need to enjoy learning.
1st group of patterns, we are going to practice here:

1st PATTERN: In this pattern subject is followed by the intransitive verbs, which expresses complete sense without the help of any other words: SUBJECT+ VERB.



SUBJECT---------------------------------------VERB-----------------------------


1. Birds------------------------------------------------------------fly.
2. Fire--------------------------------------------------------------burns.
3. The moon -----------------------------------------------------is shining.
4. The baby -------------------------------------------------------is crying.
5. Geeta -----------------------------------------------------------was singing.
6. The bell -------------------------------------------------------has rung.
7. The sun ----------------------------------------------------------rose.



2nd PATTERN: SUBJECT + VERB +DIRECT OBJECT:

SUBJECT-------------------------------VERB---------------------------DIRECT OBJECT.


1. Mr. Raj ------------------------has bought----------------------a car.
2. We ------------------------------should--------------------------the poor.
3. I ----------------------------------know------------------------his address.
4. Mohan --------------------------opened -----------------------the door.
5. Who ----------------------------broke -------------------------the judge.


3rd PATTERN: SUBJECT + VERB+ INDIRECT OBJECT+ DIRECT OBJECT.



SUBJECT------------VERB-------------INDIRECT OBJECT------DIRECT OBJECT

1. The teacher ------gave------------------us --------------------homework.
2. We -----------------have paid ----------him -------------------the money.
3. The old man-------told-----------------us ------------------the whole story.
4. You ---------------must tell-------------the police--------the truth.
5. I ------------have bought---------------my sister -----------a watch.
6. ----------------Show --------------------me------------your hands.




4th PATTERN: SUBJECT +VERB+ DIRECT OBJECT+PREPOSITION+ PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT. Many verbs can be used in pattern 3rd and 4th . Pattern 4th is preferred when the direct object is less important or when the indirect is longer than the direct object.


1. The teacher -----gave------homework---------to--------all of us.
2. We -----------have aid------the money -------to -----the proprietor.
3. I -------------have bought------a watch-------for ----my sister.
4. Mr. Raman----sold-------his car-------------to ----a man from Mumbai.
5. She ------------made ------coffee-----------for-----all of us.
6. He-----------promised ------the money-------to----- me( not to you).




5th PATTERN: SUBJECT + VERB+ PREPOSITION+ PREPOSITIONAL OBJECT:


1. We ------------------are waiting-------------------for----------------Suresh.
2. He -----------------agreed ----------------------to -----------our proposal.
3. You ----------can’t count------------------------on -------------his help.
4. These books-------belong -------------------to------------------me.
5. His uncle-----------met----------------------with---------------an accident.
6. He ----------------failed-----------------------in -------------his attempt.


6th PATTERN: It +to take+ me/ him/ etc. + time phrase + to infinitive.



1. It took me-------one year-------------- to learn French.
2. It has taken me----- one hour-----------------to write my composition.
3. It took me----------fifteen minutes------to teach the stadium.
4. It will take you--------only five minutes----to walk to the park.
5. It will take us----------- ten minutes---------- to get there.


We need to develop the patterns in habit. Some patterns are really unusual and they need to be revised.
