Verb Patterns: Group 2

1.Preparatory There + be+ Subject:

There + be + Subject,etc.

There is a book on the desk.
There is a hotel near the station.
There is a lamp beside the bed.
There was someone at the door.
There are twelve months in a year.
There are plenty of pins in a drawer.

2. Subject + verb + to infinitive,etc.(object of the verb)

She wants to go.
I forgot to post the letter.
He fears to speak in Public.
They intend to postpone the trip.
Ramesh proposes to go into business.
We would like to visit the museum.
I hoped to get a first class.
He decided not to go there.
The verbs used in this patterns are: like, love, prefer, begin, start,agree, try, attempt, choose,continue,intend, propose,desire, wish, want,hate, dislike, hope,expect, promise, refuse, fear, remember, forget, offer, learn.

3. Subject + verb + noun/pronoun + to- infinitive.

I would like you to stay.
We asked him to go.
He helped me to carry the box.
She advised him to study medicine.
The doctor ordered Gopi to stay in bed.
They warned us not to be late.
I can't allow you to smoke.
Who taught you to swim?

The chief verbs used in this pattern include: ask, tell,order,command, persuade,encourage, urge, want, wish, request,intend, expect,force, tempt,teach, invite, help, warn, like,love, hate, allow, permit, remind,cause,mean, dare.

4. to-infinitive after adjectives expressing emotion or desire.

Subject + verb + adjective + to-infinitive etc.

We were glad to see him.
She is afraid to go alone.
My brother is eager to join the army.
I shall be happy to accept your invitation.
He was anxious to meet you.
They are impatient to start.

5. to -infinitive after easy, difficult, hard, impossible, etc.

Subject + verb +Adjective + to- infinitive, etc.

This book is easy to read.
This rug is difficult to wash.
His actions are impossible to justify.
The subject is hard to understand.
His speech was difficult to follow.
The food is difficult to digest.
This medicine is pleasant to take.


6. It + be + Adjective to-infinitive, etc.

It is easy to learn Hindi.
It will be difficult to give up smoking.
It may be difficult to get the job.
It is bad to borrow money.
It is cruel to treat animals in that way.
It was impossible to lift the box.


7. It + be + Adjective +of +noun/pronoun + to infinitive, etc.


It is kind of you to help us.
It was clever of Mohan to find his way here.
It was careless of her to make a mistake.
It was unwise of me to lend him money.
It was foolish of Mr Ramesh to accept the offer.
It was wicked of him to say such things.


The following adjectives can be used in this pattern: kind, good, generous, considerate,foolish, stupid, unwise,clever, wise, nice, wrong, polite,brave, cowardly,silly,wicked,cruel,careless, etc.
