Verb Pattern : Group 5

1.
Patterns of exclamatory Sentences:
(a)What (+Adjective+) Noun (Subject+verb)
What a charming girl (she is)!
What a lovely garden (it is)!
What a good idea!
What a fool you are!
What a terrible noise!
What a (large) nose He has!
What beautiful music They are playing!
What a pity!


(b)How + Adjective/adverb +Subject +verb
How charming she is!
How lovely the garden is!
How clever you are!
How sweet the song is!
How tall you have grown!
How well she dances!
How quickly the holiday has passed!

2.
Subject + verb + Noun/pronoun + adjective

The boy pushed the door open.
The smith beat it flat.
She washed the plates clean.
The thief broke the safe open.
He turned the lamp low.
You have made the shirt dirty.
I like my coffee strong.
We found the trunk empty.

In first six examples, the adjective denotes a state that results from the action expressed by the verb.In the last two examples the noun and the adjective combine to be the object of the verb.
Verbs used in this pattern include: get, keep,beat,drive,make, paint,leave,turn, find, like wish.

3.
It + be + no good etc. + gerundial Phrase

It is no good asking him for help.
It was no good talking to her.
It's no use worrying about it.
It is worth seeing the film.
It was worthwhile seeing the exhibition.
It is amusing watching monkeys.
It has been a pleasure meeting you.

4.
Subject + verb +noun/ pronoun +present participle

I saw him crossing the bridge.
We smell somthing burning.
We noticed the boy walking down the street.
She caught him opening your letters.
They found him playing cards.
She kept the fire burning.
- (please)start the clock going.

The verb in this pattern include: see, hear,smell,feel, watch, notice,find,observe,listen,get,catch,keep,leave,set, start.

5.Subject + verb +Noun/pronoun +plain-------
----Infinitive

I saw him go out.
She watched him steal the watch.
We heard her sing.
The thief felt someone touch his arm.
---- Let me go.
We made Tom behave well.
He bade them leave the house.

6.
Subject + verb + interrogative + to-infinitive etc.

I don't know how to do it.
I wonder where to spend the weekend.
She knows how to drive a car.
He forgot when to turn.
Tom couldn't decide what to do next.
We must find out where to put it.
-- Remember how to do it.

The common verbs used in this pattern are: know, understand,wonder,remember,forget,decide,settle,find out,enquire,see,explain,guess,learn, consider.

7.
Subject +verb+Noun/ pronoun +interrogative + to infinitive etc.
I shall show you how to operate it.
He has taught me how to play chess.
They informed us where to turn off the road.
-- (please) advise me what to do.
-- (please) tell us how to get there.
We asked him where to get tickets.

Verb Patterns: Group 4

1.
Subject+ verb+ too+Adjective/Adverb+ to-infinitive etc.

She is too weak to carry the box.
I am too busy to attend the party.
He talks too fast to be understood.
My sister is too young to go to school.
She is too proud to listen to me.
The boy is too lazy to work.
He worked too slowly to be of much use to me.

2.
Subject + verb Adjective/Adverb+ enough to-infinitive etc.

She is strong enough to carry the box.
He is clever enough to understood it.
The police ran fast enough to catch the burglar.
You are old enough to know better.
She was hit hard enough to be knocked down.
He is tall enough to reach the picture.
She is stupid enough to believe us.

3.

Subject+ verb so+ Adjective/ Adverb + that-clause.

It is so dark that I can see nothing.
He talks so fast that you can hardly follow him.
The box fell so heavily that it was broken.
It was so hot that we had to postpone our trip.
He was so furious that he couldn't speak.
He walked so quickly that we couldn't catch him up.
I was so tired that I couldn't walk any further.

4.
It+ be Adjective/Noun + Noun clause.

It is strang that he should have behaved like that.
It is likely that there will be rain this afternoon.
It is possible that he doesn't understand Hindi.
It is doubtful whether he will be able to come.
It is a pity that you didn't try harder.
It was fortunate that you escaped the accident.
It was a mystery who can have taken my book.

5.
Subject+ verb Noun/pronoun Past participle

I heard my name called.
I want this letter typed.
She felt herself lifted up.
you should get that tooth pulled out.
He had his suit cleaned.
We found the house deserted.

The verbs in this pattern are: see, hear,find,feel,want,wish,like,make,prefer,get & have.

6.

Subject+ verb+ interrogative + clause

I asked where he was going.
Nobody knows when he will arrive.
I wonder what he wants.
She showed how annoyed she was.
Tom could not decide what he should do next.
I can't imagine why she has behaved like that.
- Find out when the train is due.

The important verbs used in this pattern are: say,ask,wonder,know,believe,imagine, decide,discuss,understand,show,reveal,find out,suggest tell( especially in tthe interrogative and negative).

7.

Subject + verb Noun/pronoun interrogative +clause

She asked me when you had gone.
- Tell us what it is.
I showed them how they should do it.
- (please)advise me what I should do.
- (please)inform me Where I should turn off the road.
Can you tell me where he lives.

The chief verbs in this pattern are: tell,ask,show,teach,advise,inform.

Verb Patterns: Group 3

1.
Subject + verb + Subject Complement
This is a pen.
His brother became a soldier.
It is me.
That book is mine.
Gopal looks sad.
My father grew angry.
The children kept quiet.
The milk has turned sour.
The complement usually consists of a noun (1&2), a pronoun
(3&4),or an adjective(5,6,7& 8).

2.
Subject + verb + noun/pronoun+ (to be) complement
I consider the plan ( to be) unwise.
We thought him (to be) foolish.
People supposed him (to be) a patriot.
They reported Robert (to be) a reliable person.
The court appointed her guardian of the orphan child.
The club chose Mr Sunder trreasurer.
She called him a fool.
The complement may be an adjective, adjective phrase or noun.
The chief verbs used under this pattern are: appoint,choose,elect, make,call,name, nominate, crown,christen.

3.
Conditionals: Type 1(open condition)---Main clause :will/shall/can/may+plain infinitive

If you study hard ---- you will get a first class.
If it rains--- we shall postpone our picnic.
If I find the pen-----I shall give it to you.
If he runs all the time-----he can get there in time.
If her uncle arrives--------she may not come with you.
If you hit the dog--------- it will bite you.
Coditionals of this type that something will happen if a certain condition is fulfilled. The condition may or may not be fulfilled.


4.
conditionals: type 2 (improbable or imaginary condition)
If-clause simple past(subjunctive) ------------------Main clause :would, should,could, might +plain infinitive.

If you should studied hard--------------you would get a first class.
If I were you -------------I should not do that.
If we started now----------------we could be in time.
If you were a millionaire------------how you would spend your time?
If he stopped smoking -------------he might get fat.
If I had a degree ----------------I could get a job easily.

conditionals of this type are used when we talk about something which we don't expect to happen or which is purely imaginary.


5.
Conditionals: type 3 (Unfulfilled conditions)
If clause: past perfect-------- Main clause + would, should,could, might + perfect infinitive.

If you had studied hard------------you would have got a first class.
If I had tried again--------------you should have succeeded.
If I had seen him----------I could have saved him from drowning.
If you had left that wasp alone------ it might not have stung you.
If you had come to me --------- I would not have got into trouble.

Conditions of this type say that something didnot happen because a certain condition was not fulfilled.

6.
Subject + verb + that clause (Object of the verb)

I suppose (that)he is not at home.
I expect (that) it will rain.
We hoped (that)you would succeed.
He says (that)he has met your uncle.
The teacher said he was very busy.
Padma suggested that we should go to the park.
He admitted that he had written the letter.
They complained that they had been fairly treated.

That is often omitted,especially after say,think,suppose, hope & expect.
Among the important verbs used in this pattern are say,think,suppose,imagine,know,believe, admit,confess,declare,suggest,complain,hope,expect,fear,feel,hear,intend,
notice,propose,show,understand, wonder.

7.
Subject+ verb+ Noun/pronoun +that clause

He told me (that)he was coming on Sunday.
I warned him that there were pickpockets in crowd.
She has assured me that she is ready to help.
Vemu promised us tht he would be here at five.
We have informed him that we are leaving this afternoon.
He satisfied me that he could do the work well.

The chief verbs used in this pattern are tell,inform,promise,warn,remind,teach,assure,satisfy.

Negative and Interrogative sentences have also to be practiced.

ACTIVE VOICE: SIMPLE TENSES
